Yukon Salon: A Beary Hairy Game

Created by David Fooden

Yukon Salon is a creative, fast-paced card game for 2-4 players competing to be the best stylist in the Yukon by styling hairdos for Grizzly Bears and beards for Lumberjacks. Each client that you style rewards you with a combination of points to win the game and abilities and bonuses to help attempt riskier styles on more difficult clients. Sway the clients into choosing your style by making outrageous, unique claims and press your luck to earn the right mix of points and rewards.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Over 500 backers? It's playmat time!
about 7 years ago – Sat, Feb 11, 2017 at 01:25:27 PM

At the time I'm writing this five hundred two smart, attractive, impeccably-dressed, wonderful people who love fun have backed Yukon Salon!

That means we've passed the 500-backer stretch goal, and anyone who wants rustic-fabulous playmats of their own can download them here. I'll also place a link on the project page so it's easy to find again.

We're also getting close to unlocking the custom dice upgrade. I really hope we hit it, because custom dice are awesome and I can hardly wait to include them and reveal the goal after that!

If you're curious about the next stretch goal, you can hear more about it in this interview I did with BJ Shea's Geek Nation.

Thanks for your support everyone, I hope you're having a great weekend!

Thanks to all of you, we're more than halfway to our second stretch goal already!
Hazel here is so excited about the custom dice that she achieved her final…excuse me, her ultimate form!

Some other great projects going on right now
about 7 years ago – Mon, Feb 06, 2017 at 05:43:22 PM

One of the things I love about Kickstarter is discovering work by creators of all kinds of amazing stuff I might not have heard about before. I'd like to take a moment to let you know about some other excellent projects that are funding now too.

Dwarves: Dig, Delve, Die
Dwarves is a great-looking dice-placement game where the dice you place are fantasy dwarves mining for treasures. It's by the makers of Titans Tactics (another good game I'd recommend). They've already unlocked a bunch of stretch goals, and look like they're on track to hit some cool custom dice as well.

By Order of the Queen
This co-op fantasy boardgame from the team behind JunKing has some amazing art and style and looks really fun. I'm looking forward to playing it with my daughter and my friends.

The Echo Arcana Shadowrun Art Book
Echo is a good friend of mine, and an amazing illustrator whose work is all over the game industry. Her latest art book is gorgeous—especially if you like Shdowrun and/or tarot imagery.

Utter Fabrication: Tales of Haunted Houses and Weird Places
This anthology of creepy and weird fiction by fellow Seattleites looks like a fun read from some up and coming writers. Give it a look if you like stories about haunted houses.

Cards upgrade UNLOCKED, next stretch goal…CUSTOM DICE!
about 7 years ago – Sun, Feb 05, 2017 at 10:03:04 PM

We just passed the $8k stretch goal, that means upgraded cards are unlocked!

And that means I get to tell you about the next exciting (OK, kind of exciting…OK, I'm excited about it at least) stretch goal!

If we get to $10k, the game will come with custom wood dice! Instead of a boring old single pip on the one face, these snazzy dice will feature a bear head staring up at you whenever you roll a one.

You'll even be able to get additional dice as an add-on if you'd like extra sets once we unlock this stretch goal.

I've also got one more stretch goal to announce. If we get to 500 backers, I'll make the playmats I use to demo Yukon Salon at conventions available as a free pdf for everyone. I've been asked about them at every convention I've shown Yukon Salon at, and while I'd like to offer them with the game, they're just too expensive to manufacture along with a small casual game like this one. But if you'd like your own set, you'll be able to print them out (I'd recommend laminating them), or use a custom game mat site to create your own.

As always, thank you for your support and for getting us this far! We're almost halfway through the campaign, and doing great! I'm looking froward to unlocking more upgrades and new content—I can hardly wait to tell you about the next stretch goal!

The first stretch goal!
about 7 years ago – Tue, Jan 31, 2017 at 05:28:31 PM

Hey everyone, I'm back from PAX South, and boy am I tired!

PAX was amazing, I met hundreds of people who were enthusiastic about Yukon Salon and got to play it with them, this project funded the first night I was there, I made new friends, ran into old friends, and even did a couple of interviews! Much thanks to the folks at PAX for selecting me to participate, to everyone who came out and played a game, and especially to my new backers. Ya'll are wonderful.

But enough gushing, I said I'd tell you more about the first stretch goal on Monday, and it's almost Tuesday, so this update needs to get posted!

The first stretch goal…

…is…

UPGRADED CARDS!

In its present iteration, the cards are set to be printed on 300gsm black core paper stock with a smooth glossy finish. This is a high-quality paper stock that most card games are printed on, but we can do better. Card games are tactile, and I'm a stickler for aesthetics, so, if we reach $8000 the cards will be upgraded to 350gsm white core paper stock with a linen finish. The thicker paper will resist more wear and shuffling and the linen finish feels great in your hand and makes the cards easier to grip and handle.

The second stretch goal might have something to do with bears and dice, but that's a story for another update.
