Yukon Salon: A Beary Hairy Game

Created by David Fooden

Yukon Salon is a creative, fast-paced card game for 2-4 players competing to be the best stylist in the Yukon by styling hairdos for Grizzly Bears and beards for Lumberjacks. Each client that you style rewards you with a combination of points to win the game and abilities and bonuses to help attempt riskier styles on more difficult clients. Sway the clients into choosing your style by making outrageous, unique claims and press your luck to earn the right mix of points and rewards.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

You get a book, and you get a book, and YOU get a book…everyone gets a book!
about 7 years ago – Thu, Feb 23, 2017 at 11:13:06 PM

We made it to the fifth stretch goal! That means every game will include a copy of the Parks and Beauty Agency Beautician's Training Manual booklet to help you sell those difficult clients on that outrageous style they absolutely must try. I'm super excited to include it with the game. it'll be a fun read, and help encourage all kinds of ridiculous storytelling when you play.

We're in the final 24 hours now, Will we make to the next stretch goal? I have no idea!

Oh, I should tell you what that goal is, huh?

If we get to $22,000 I'll be able to afford a new, unique illustration for the box, by illustrator Ricardo Martinez. The box already looks great with the art from the cards on it, but a new cover painting will really make it jump off of your game shelf. Here's the piece of Ricardo's art that made me want to hire him to illustrate the box.

$22,000 seems a long way to go in 24 hours, but whether we get there or not, you've helped make Yukon Salon a reality (with awesome dice and a bonus booklet) and I'm grateful to have your support.

A quick update (to the previous update)
about 7 years ago – Tue, Feb 21, 2017 at 11:55:39 PM

Hey everyone, just an update to last update. I'm postponing the Reddit AMA I had originally planned to do on Wednesday morning, since Reddit wants more lead time to set those up than I first thought.

It's the final 68 hours! This has been an exciting month for me, I'm extremely grateful for all of your support, and looking forward to getting the game into production and shipped to you!

Fourth Stretch Goal Unlocked!
about 7 years ago – Sun, Feb 19, 2017 at 06:17:12 PM

Hey everyone, we hit our fourth stretch goal!

That means everyone will be able to download a pdf and e-book version of the Parks and Beauty Agency Beautician's Training Manual! I'll do my best to format it for most commonly-available tablets and phones.

The next stretch goal, at $16k, will make a printed version of the booklet available with every copy of the game. If we don't hit that one, I'll include an add-on in the backer survey, should anyone want to order a copy independently.

Thank you all for your support. I know some of you have helped by liking and sharing Facebook posts and liking (clicking the ♥ icon) or rating Yukon Salon on BoardGameGeek. Please keep it up, the more backers the game has, the more stretch goals get added. I really want to put a printed copy of the Beautician's Training Manual in your game!

And last but not least, I'll be doing a Reddit AMA on Wednesday morning, 2/22, from 9-11 am PST.  If you're a redditor, or want to ask me something, please join in! I'll post an update with a link for the AMA once I have it.

Well-coiffed bear hugs!

about 7 years ago – Thu, Feb 16, 2017 at 04:06:30 PM

Hey everyone, here are some updates about what's going on the the world of Yukon Salon!

BoardGameGeek
It took a while, but Yukon Salon finally has a page on BoardgameGeek. Check it out if you have a moment, and if you've played Yukon Salon, please give it a rating, it really helps more people find it.

CBC Yukon
I got to talk about Yukon Salon with a Canadian radio station in the actual Yukon! CBC Yukon's Tara McCarthy Interviewed me this week, you can listen to it here.

Custom Dice Add-Ons
I've sorted out the costs for additional custom dice. If you're interested in adding on more dice, the cost will be as follows:
2 additional dice: add $4.00 to your pledge (includes shipping)
4 additional dice: add $7.00 to your pledge (includes shipping)
6 additional dice: add $10.00 to your pledge (includes shipping)
(I'll update the project page with this info too.)

Twitch
If you're on Twitch, I'll be a guest on Late Night Tabletop tomorrow, Friday, February 17th, at 6pm PST.

Podcasts
I spoke with Jeff Back about game design on his podcast Your Table's On Fire recently. That episode will be posted soon. If you like game design give his podcast a listen!

Someone else made a bear & lumberjack game?
It turns out there's another card game with a bear and lumberjack theme on Kickstarter! Check out Bearicades by Todd Walsh of the Philly Game Maker's Guild.

Games by designers I met at PAX South
And before I forget, here are some games by designers I met a couple of weeks ago at PAX South:
Dice Throne and Wrathborne Champions were some awesome games I shared space with in the Tabletop Indie Showcase. I also got to talk with the makers of the fun-looking party game Argle Bargle (which ends today!)

Whew! OK, that's all the news I have today. I hope it was non-boring and relevant to your interests. Thank you all so much for your support. We're getting really close to being able to include the Beautician's Training Manual and I remain very excited about that.

Custom dice are a GO + announcing the Parks and Beauty Agency Beautician's Training Manual!
about 7 years ago – Mon, Feb 13, 2017 at 10:48:48 PM

We're over $10k! Custom dice are unlocked for EVERYONE! Well, OK, not everyone, just the lovely people that get a copy of Yukon Salon. Which is probably you, if you're reading this. Extra dice (beyond the two that are included in the game) will also be available as an add-on.

Excited as I am that we've unlocked those snazzy dice, I'm even more excited to reveal the next stretch goal. At $12k, backers will get a pdf and e-book version of the 32-page Parks and Beauty Agency Beautician's Training Manual and if we hit $16k, a printed copy of it will come with every game!

The Training Manual details the history and selling points of every unique style in the game, providing creative jumping-off points for when you need to come up with something to sell your clients on the style you want them to wear. My favorite thing about this stretch goal, is I get to write some of the entries in the Training Manual alongside this star-studded lineup of guest authors:

Keith Baker, creator of Phoenix Dawn Command, Gloom, Illimat, the Eberron campaign setting for D&D, and many other things.

David Malki, creator of Wondermark and co-creator of Machine of Death.

Erik Scott de Bie, author of the World of Ruin series, Shadowbane series, and Forgotten Realms designer.

Clinton J. Boomer, prolific speculative fiction author and tabletop RPG designer.

Simon Berman, former Privateer Press staff writer (Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy Roleplaying, WARMACHINE, HORDES)

Chris Adams, co-creator of the Yamara comic and co-designer of Oh My God! There’s An Axe In My Head and the CºNTINUUM RPG

Matthew Moore, creator of Bring your Own Book and video game designer.

Evan J. Peterson, journalist and author of the PrEP Diaries, fiction, and nonfiction works, producer and host of SHRIEK: Women of Horror Film.

This booklet is not only helpful when you're stuck coming up with a sixth claim about why Gladys will love how she looks with The Pumpkin King, but will also provide a glimpse into the absurd, cheeky world of Yukon Salon, where the Canadian government decided to subsidize the beautification of forest dwellers during the height of beauty parlours in popular culture.

Thanks again for your support and enthusiasm!
